West End has held a Candlelighting service during Advent for many decades.  It is a service similar to a service of lessons and carols, wherein there are scripture readings as we wait through Advent for the birth of the Christ child, and there are seasonal anthems and carols.  All of our bell choirs and vocal choirs for children, youth, and adults participate, and the service leads to the lighting of the candles held by each person in the sanctuary as the sanctuary lights have been extinguished.  During the singing of familiar carols, everyone files out of the sanctuary with their candles, representing our carrying our light into the world, and the service ends with a darkened sanctuary and everyone singing, “Joy To the World!”
