Encounter Service of Prayer and Presence, November 16, 2022
This is the eleventh of the Encounter Worship Series, a mid-week service of “prayer and presence,” taking place in conjunction with West End’s Wednesday evening dinner and programming. The theme for the current series is “Healing.” Maggie Jarrell, Pastor of Children and Families, leads the service this evening, and Matthew Phelps, West End’s Minister of Music, is the music leader. The scripture for the evening is Luke 6.17-26, the Lukan version of the Sermon on the Mount, this one on a level place. This includes the “beatitudes,” but it also includes the “woes,” showing the writer of Luke’s view of Jesus as having come to turn the world upside down, challenging the rules and laws that kept some people oppressed. Jesus offers hope to those who were hungry, poor, despised, oppressed, hated, excluded. Maggie ties the beatitudes to the “Healing” theme of the Encounter series. She then poses a series of four questions for people to consider during the time of Reflection and Response. (NOTE: Below is a pdf of this evening’s program for viewing and/or downloading.)
