Encounter Service of Prayer and Presence, September 21, 2022
This is the fourth of the Encounter Worship Series, a mid-week service of “prayer and presence,” taking place in conjunction with West End’s Wednesday evening dinner and programming. The theme for the first six weeks is “Come, Holy Spirit.” Rev. Brandon Baxter leads the service, and Matthew Phelps, West End’s Minister of Music, is the music leader. This is an opportunity to hear and ponder the creative work of the Spirit, and to meditate on the Spirit. Today’s theme is “Spirit in the Early Church,” and we pray Prayer to the Holy Spirit by St. Augustine, and then hear the reading O Comforting Fire of Spirit by Hildegaard von Bingen. Brandon first reviews what we’ve considered regarding the Holy Spirit through the weeks leading up to tonight. Then he outlines Christians’ view of the Holy Spirit through major parts of history and gives a time for the group to sit in meditation and let the Spirit speak to each.
