This is "Baptism of the Lord Sunday." Mark’s gospel is bare-bones narrative and begins with Jesus’ baptism where, immediately as he is coming up out of the water, the heavens are “torn apart” and God declares Jesus to be “my Son, the Beloved.” It is God’s unconditional love, bestowed on the baptized, and today we remember our own baptisms and are in awe of that love bestowed upon us.
