Today we celebrate Epiphany, a remembrance of the journey of the Magi to see the baby. Much legend has grown up about this event that is not actually in the biblical story, but it is clear from Matthew’s account that these were very learned people, non-Jews who read the scriptures and followed a star they had never seen before, specifically because they believed it would lead them to a baby who would be king of the Jews. When they arrived at what must have been the very humble house of Joseph and Mary, the text says, “They were overwhelmed with joy.” What can we learn from their example?
