We are often awed by the story of Jesus’ call of the first four disciples, who had been fishing, were called by Jesus to fish for people instead, and “immediately” left to follow him. How could they leave their work and families, just like that? The writer of Mark’s gospel uses the term, “immediately,” over and over again, and perhaps it indicates proximity as well as time – that God’s presence and action are right there, right then. As a result, those called by Jesus, including us, are in the presence of God and in God’s time and charged with God’s call.
