The words to the carol, "I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day" were based on a poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, written at a particularly difficult time in his life. Michael tells the story of that poem, interspersed with the verses of the carol, sung by Nancy Hawthorne.
