This first story in Mark of Jesus’ ministry can be disturbing to us because it involves casting out an unclean spirit. Today, we interpret the situation as a problem that might be solved by a doctor or a psychiatrist using medication or therapy. So how does this “unclean spirit” relate to us? Can an individual or a congregation be inhabited by such a spirit that desperately calls for Jesus’ curing hands?
