In today’s passage, King David has attained the kingship, has fought off all invaders, and is at the pinnacle of his years as king. At this point he realizes that although he now lives in a marvelous palace, God’s dwelling is still the tabernacle, a tent. So he proposes to build God a house, a temple. Nathan, the prophet, thinks it’s a great idea. But God comes to Nathan in a night vision, telling Nathan to tell David no – David is not to build a temple. How are we to respond when God tells us no?
