Matthew Phelps on Piano: Benefit Concert
West End UMC’s Minister of Music, Matthew Phelps, performed Frederic Rzewski’s “The People United Will Never Be Defeated,” on piano. The piece depicts the struggle for social justice in Chile in the 1970s, and it is considered to be one of the most difficult pieces of piano music ever written by an American composer. Dr. Phelps played it as a benefit concert, with donations taken for the Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition. In a few weeks, Dr. Phelps will perform this piece several times on a California tour.
